Hey guys,
The time has come for SPEAC to recruit reps to carry on our work while we're off doing exams!
We're looking for as many girls as possible from the MIV to the V who want to help protect the environment. There's loads you can do this term and we will be able to help you with it, including organising our walk to school week and maybe even a full-on SPEAC festival towards the end of term!
If you're interested, come along to a casual meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) break in T20. If you're not sure yet, show up anyway and we can tell you more about it.
Hope to see loads of you there,
SPEAC xx

Save the Hedgehogs!

This population collapse is largely due to the loss and
fragmentation of habitats, increased road traffic, tidier gardens which no
longer provide a hospitable environment for them to live or forage for food and
the use of pesticides which can poison hedgehogs. Clearly it isn’t possible for
us to tackle all of these problems single-handedly, but there are many ways in
which everyone can help to protect hedgehogs. One of the biggest reasons for
their decline is habitat loss, as hedgehogs need wild areas such as dense
hedgerows, overgrown grass, piles of leaf litter and logs and old abandoned
sheds or barn, but unfortunately parks and gardens are kept so tidy nowadays
that they struggle to find suitable places to live.

Thank you to
everyone who got involved, especially those who baked for the bake sale and we
hope that you’ll try to make your home and neighbourhood more
hedgehog-friendly!

SPGS Stuck With Foncho
Hi there!
Monday 24th February to Sunday 9th March was Fairtrade
Fortnight with the theme ‘Stick with Foncho to make bananas fair’. SPEAC arranged
a number of events to raise awareness about the amazing work of the Fairtrade Foundation
and to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight.
Events included a Fairtrade party with a
chocolate fountain and bananas (both Fairtrade!), the showing of Madagascar and
Fairtrade awareness films, combined with a Fairtrade banoffee pie desert during
lunch. No event would be complete without a dress up day with many people
wearing yellow on the Friday (including SPEAC’s very own Kate Gardiner dressed
up as a banana!).
Thank you to everyone who got involved and showed their
support - and don't forget to buy Fairtrade!

Fairtrade Fortnight 2014
Hey guys!
Next week (commencing 3rd March) we'll be celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight 2014. The Fairtrade Foundation works towards better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world, and is a really great organisation for us to be supporting.
On Tuesday 4th March, we'll be hosting a Faitrade Fondue Fiesta, including a chocolate fountain and competitive quiz with food prizes. This will be at T18 from 12 - 12:30, and everyone's welcome so please come along!
On Friday 7th, we're showing Madagascar in the great hall at lunch time and selling Fairtrade snacks. There'll also be a Fairtrade banoffee pie at lunch, and loads of opportunities for you to find out more about the foundation.
You can learn more about Fairtrade here: http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/
See you all next week!
